HOW IT WORKS
The Open Water Diver certification program is conducted in three parts. First, you are required to complete some paperwork, along with the online learning portion of the course. Here you will learn the all the important basics and general information about scuba diving. The second phase is the confined water session, where you will get hands-on training preparing and using the scuba gear. This portion of the class is conducted at a protected cove of Ala Moana beach park, its shallow depth and calm water makes for a relaxing, easy introduction to breathing on scuba gear and learning the fundamental scuba skills to have a safe, enjoyable dive. Finally, in the final phase, you and your instructor take four open water dives, where you will head out on the dive boat, and apply your skills. Each dive trip will include two dives. Each dive includes practice on all the fundamental skills, along with plenty of time for checking out the incredible coral gardens and marine life. You are almost guaranteed to see a sea turtle while diving. We see them just about every day, along with thousands of colorful reef fish.

TIMELINE
The online learning portion is usually completed over several days at your own pace. Many choose to complete this e-learning prior to the start of their Hawaii vacation. The online classes consists of learning modules and review questions. The confined water session at Ala Moana beach park takes several hours to learn and practice all the skills. Then, the four open water dives are conducted over two days, usually consecutively, but we can work with you to best fit your schedule. Each boat trip is usually two dives, and takes 3-4 hours. We have three boat departure times daily. The boat rides to the reef are very quick, less than 15 minutes, and offer incredible views of Waikiki and Honolulu. Lastly, there is a multiple choice final exam. Don't worry, it will be easy and common sense once you have taken the class.

WHAT TO BRING
For the first day at Ala Moana beach park, all you need is a swimsuit. If you have your own dive mask, that is a great idea, but not required. All the gear is included. We also recommend bringing a towel and maybe a change of clothes for after the class. There are beach showers and restrooms available. We also recommend you bring a towel, sunglasses, and maybe a hat for the boat trips. We have a dry storage area on the boat. You are also welcome to bring your underwater camera, such as a GoPro, however we do recommend the Super Suit for your GoPro to work better underwater. Drinking water, fresh pineapple and snacks are provided, though you are welcome to bring your own beverages and munchies as well.
