Special Considerations

  • The minimum age is 10 years old.
  • Must be Open Water certified
  • You must complete a medical questionnaire and may need a doctor’s approval if you have any disqualifying conditions.
  • When scheduling your dives, allow at least 18 hours after diving before flying. This is important — you cannot fly the same day after scuba diving.

What is Actually Going On With This?

In the Science of Diving specialty course, you learn that scuba diving involves lots of science. How does depth affect pressure? How does that pressure affect our bodies? Do temperature changes affect pressure, and the volume of the gasses we breath?

Physics, physiology, oceanography, gas theory, and many other scientific fields are all important knowledge for scuba divers. We teach an introduction to many of these disciplines. Universal gas laws, human physiology, and the physics of diving are the main focus. The Science of Diving course is a prerequisite to become a Divemaster

How It Works

The Science of Diving course is academic. There is an online e-Learning component that needs to be done first. Then, we spend time discussing physics, diving physiology, and other subjects that were maybe glossed over in your previous courses.

This course does not include diving, but can be added to any of our Daily fun Dives or other Courses

Timeline

Since this course is mostly academic we have flexibility on when and where to do the hands-on training. If you combining with a Fun Dive or other Course, we’ll do the training on the boat. Otherwise, we’ll find a time that works for all of us when you call to sign up.

Timeline

This course can be done on any of our boat charters. We typically prefer the 11 am Coral Reef dives as they provide a more casual experience that is better suited to learning about the boat.

Science of Diving Certification

Upon completion of all academic and open water requirements, your instructor will issue the Science of Diving certification card.

These logged dives and certification will count to your next recognition rating of Advanced Open Water or Master Diver

What To Bring

  • All you need is a swimsuit for the first day: all of the dive gear is included!
    •  If you bring a change of clothes for after class, there are beach showers and restrooms.
  • If you already own personal gear, like mask, snorkels, or fins, bring them. You’ll be more comfortable in your own gear.
  • You can bring a towel, sunglasses & maybe a hat for the boat trips (we have a dry storage area).
  • Bring your underwater camera & its waterproof casing to get the best shots!
  • We provide drinking water, fresh pineapple & snacks, but you can also bring your own.
