Special Considerations

  • The minimum age is 10 years old.
  • Must be Open Water certified
  • You must complete a medical questionnaire and may need a doctor’s approval if you have any disqualifying conditions.
  • When scheduling your dives, allow at least 18 hours after diving before flying. This is important — you cannot fly the same day after scuba diving.

You know, the one with the round fins and pointed tail?”

In this Fish ID course, you learn how to identify the different classes and species of fish through their different characteristics and anatomy. Specifically, we look at how to ID fish based on their size, colorations, behaviors, and the shape of their body, fins, and tail.

This class involves much more than simply looking up the name of a fish in a guide slate or book! Students learn the tools and skills to identify the unique species endemic to Hawaii, and learn about fish around the world. First, students learn basic fish anatomy, morphology, and their unique behaviors. Secondly, you identify fish by their phylum, class, and order. Finally, you can correctly identify the individual species.

How It Works

The online e-Learning is where you learn the basics of how to differentiate families of fish. You’ll also learn about behaviors and fish anatomy. On the boat, we’ll put these skills to the test and actually find and identify specific species of fish.

Timeline

This course can be done on any of our boat charters. We typically prefer the 11 am Coral Reef dives as they provide a more casual experience that is better suited to observing the animals.

Fish Identification Certification

Upon completion of all academic and open water requirements, your instructor will issue the Fish Identification certification card.

These logged dives and certification will count to your next recognition rating of Advanced Open Water or Master Diver

What To Bring

  • All you need is a swimsuit for the first day: all of the dive gear is included!
    •  If you bring a change of clothes for after class, there are beach showers and restrooms.
  • If you already own personal gear, like mask, snorkels, or fins, bring them. You’ll be more comfortable in your own gear.
  • You can bring a towel, sunglasses & maybe a hat for the boat trips (we have a dry storage area).
  • Bring your underwater camera & its waterproof casing to get the best shots!
  • We provide drinking water, fresh pineapple & snacks, but you can also bring your own.
