Special Considerations

  • The minimum age is 12 years old.
  • Must be Open Water certified
  • You must complete a medical questionnaire and may need a doctor’s approval if you have any disqualifying conditions.
  • When scheduling your dives, allow at least 18 hours after diving before flying. This is important — you cannot fly the same day after scuba diving.

You Got There: Now, Get Back

Underwater Navigation: Knowing what direction you need to swim is important in many aspects of diving! This is especially important for finding the reef or wreck and then returning to shore or the boat.

You will learn all this and more in this very practical specialty course:
  • navigation patterns
  • natural navigation
  • compass techniques to help get you from the entry point to the dive site
  • safely find your way back
  • how to estimate distance underwater
  • basic navigation patterns

This Underwater Navigation course stresses practical navigation techniques: getting from point A to point B, and then back again. All online coursework must be finished before any in-water sessions.

How It Works

The e-Learning has all of the theory you need to get around underwater.  Chapters on different ways to use the compass, natural navigation, search patterns, and more.  In the water, we’ll put these skills to use navigating around the reefs

Timeline

This course is done on the midday Coral Reef dives. We prefer shallower dives as it gives us more time underwater to play with the compass and run search patterns.

Navigation Certification

Upon completion of all academic and open water requirements, your instructor will issue the Navigation certification card.

These logged dives and certification will count to your next recognition rating of Advanced Open Water or Master Diver

What To Bring

  • All you need is a swimsuit for the first day: all of the dive gear is included!
    •  If you bring a change of clothes for after class, there are beach showers and restrooms.
  • If you already own personal gear, like mask, snorkels, or fins, bring them. You’ll be more comfortable in your own gear.
  • You can bring a towel, sunglasses & maybe a hat for the boat trips (we have a dry storage area).
  • Bring your underwater camera & its waterproof casing to get the best shots!
  • We provide drinking water, fresh pineapple & snacks, but you can also bring your own.
