Special Considerations

  • The minimum age is 10 years old.
  • Must be Open Water certified
  • You must complete a medical questionnaire and may need a doctor’s approval if you have any disqualifying conditions.
  • When scheduling your dives, allow at least 18 hours after diving before flying. This is important — you cannot fly the same day after scuba diving.

Dive Smarter with some Knowledge

With Waves, Tides, and Currents, this advanced specialty course covers a whole range of new skills for scuba divers and increases your comfort level in more challenging dive conditions. This course is very useful, as many of the world’s most beautiful dive sites are also the most dangerous, especially with stronger currents. This course covers four dives over two days, and we can extend it if you are staying in Oahu longer.

First, you will learn dry skills like examining currents from the surface, analyzing tide charts, and planning dives in strong currents. Next, you will apply these skills underwater, safely incorporating them in four challenging dives. Finally, you will incorporate these new skills on a dive. Some examples are making a negative entry, safely planning and making a drift dive, and deploying an SMB while drift diving. After this, you’ll be a stronger and smarter diver that can more easily handle rougher conditions and more challenging dives.

How It Works

This course is an introduction to oceanography and how it affects us as scuba divers.  You’ll learn about different kinds of currents, what causes waves and how to read the swell, and how tidal changes present unique challenges to diving certain parts of the world.

The dives allow you to put this knowledge into a real world context and see how you are affected by ocean swells and currents.

Timeline

This course can be done on any of our boat charters. We typically prefer the 11 am Coral Reef dives as they provide a more casual experience that gives us more options for variable conditions.

Waves, Tides, & Currents Certification

Upon completion of all academic and open water requirements, your instructor will issue the Waves, Tides, & Currents certification card.

These logged dives and certification will count to your next recognition rating of Advanced Open Water or Master Diver

What To Bring
